Krill harvesting vessel Saga Sea ISO certified
Aker BioMarine’s krill harvesting vessel Saga Sea is now ISO 9001:2008 certified. The ice-rated trawler, which fishes for krill in the frigid conditions of Antarctic seas, can now produce QRILL™ meal that has been harvested and processed in an on-board plant that meets international customer and regulatory requirements.
“ISO certification offers our customers the assurance that our QRILL™ meal is produced in accordance with internationally recognized food safety guidelines,” says Matts Johansen, executive vice president of sales and marketing for Aker BioMarine Antarctic.
In order to meet ISO voluntary standards Aker BioMarine Antarctic demonstrated the ability to consistently provide krill oil that meets customer, statutory and regulatory requirements. It also showed the company’s commitment to personnel training, internal audit, and continuous improvements of processing systems.
Earning ISO certification for Saga Sea represents a significant addition to Aker BioMarine Antarctic’s already impressive safety dossier.
Aker BioMarine Antarctic’s proprietary Eco-Harvesting™ technology and on-board processing result in the unique composition of krill products and provide full traceability from sea to finished product.
The Marine Stewardship Council (MSC) has granted MSC Certification to Aker BioMarine Antarctic’s fisheries, an exclusive distinction that no other krill fishery has earned. This means that Aker BioMarine Antarctic fishes for krill in a sustainable manner which does not affect other Antarctic wildlife negatively.
As part of an established commitment to substantiating krill’s health benefits, Aker BioMarine Antarctic continues to sponsor clinical trials with QRILL™ Antarctic Krill Meal. These have consistently demonstrated a higher uptake of nutrients, high feed intake in aquatic animals, and increased uptake of DHA in heart tissue compared to other omega-3 sources.
