Committed to krill fishery
Aker BioMarine, the world’s largest harvester of Antarctic krill, has added another vessel to its fleet. This will help ensure that the company can meet the growing demand for both Qrill™ and Superba™ krill products.

Krill fishing vessel Thorshøvdi was bought by Aker BioMarine from Norway’s Krillsea Group AS. It has been renamed Antarctic Sea and will undergo an intensive renovation before heading south to Antarctic seas next season.
Like all the other ships in its krill fleet, Antarctic Sea will be outfitted with Aker BioMarine’s proprietary technology with patents pending Eco Harvesting technology. This allows krill to be sustainably harvested with no by- catch of marine mammals, seabirds or unwanted fish.

“This new acquisition demonstrates that we are in the krill fishery for the long term,” says Aker BioMarine. “Like all other vessels that we have in the krill fishery, besides using the most advance, eco-friendly fishing system available, Antarctic Sea will have an independent observer on board to verify our no by-catch policy.”
The Marine Stewardship Council (MSC) has granted MSC Certification to Aker BioMarine Antarctic‘s fisheries, an exclusive distinction that no other krill fishery has earned. In addition, although there is not a requirement, Aker BioMarine maintains a policy of having independent observers on all its krill ships and is again the only krill company to do so.

To aid researchers, Aker BioMarine supports scientists studying krill every year. Antarctic Sea will be participating in the company’s scientific program.
