Antarctic Conservation Body, CCAMLR, Establishes Protected Areas in the Southern Ocean

The Commission for the Conservation of Antarctic Marine Living Resources (CCAMLR) met in Hobart, Australia, from 24 October to 4 November for CCAMLR- XXX (2011) meeting. During the two-week meeting, CCAMLR established a framework of marine protected areas in the Southern Ocean, designed to preserve the ecosystem and further conservation goals in the Antarctic ecosystem while also ensuring that the krill fishery will be able to continue sustainable harvesting practices in the region.

Humans, pets and farmed fish all benefit from krill

US-based Schiff Nutrition International – one of the world’s leading vitamin and nutritional supplement companies - and Norway’s Aker BioMarine have signed a long term krill oil supply deal.
This agreement will supply Schiff with up to 300 metric tons of krill oil a year for its MegaRed® Omega-3 krill oil soft-gel capsules. Launched in 2006, Schiff says that its krill oil supplements are one of its greatest success stories.

Krill are small shrimp-like crustaceans that constitute one of the most abundant sources of marine nutrients. They live, breed and feed in cold, dark ocean waters and are mostly found in huge swarms which can extend over 450 square kilometers and weigh up to two million tonnes. Euphasia superba is the most frequent species of krill in the Southern Ocean. To protect the long-term future of krill, the Convention for the Conservation of Antarctic Marine Living Resources (CCAMLR) restricts annual krill fishing to about 1% of the total population.
