Bream larvae thrive on krill
Feeding trials in the Canary Islands have shown that Antarctic krill phospholipids boost growth and improve fatty acid composition in gilthead sea bream larvae. Spanish researchers found that all larvae fed on krill diets were significantly larger than the larvae on controlled diets. These results came from a trial by the Grupo de Investigacion en Acuicultura (GIA) in Las Palmas, Gran Canaria.
The clear growth and health benefits seen with the krill diets led GIA research scientist Marisol Izquierdo to conclude: “The results show the high quality of the krill products and recommend their introduction in diets for gilthead sea bream larvae.” He added that krill products outperform soya lecithin as a source of phospholipids in the larval diets and represent a viable alternative to other feeds. The krill products, including Qrill™ oil, were supplied by Aker BioMarine.
