Krill may hold key to future of aquaculture
Antarctic krill is being touted as the solution to making fish farming and other aquaculture more sustainable. With pressure on fish stocks, aquaculture has been identified by the UN as the way to meet world seafood demand. It had been feared a shortage of nutritious feed would prevent growth, but trials by Norwegian fishing business Aker BioMarine have indicated that krill meal is an effective feed for species such as salmon, sea bream and shrimp.
The use of krill in aquaculture has been limited as nutrients deteriorate rapidly if they are not quickly processed. But Aker BioMarine has developed a harvesting method that minimises physical damage before the krill are rapidly processed on board.
