Establishing an effective feeding response in recently transferred smolts is critical to achieve optimum growth performance, improved seawater adaption and resistance to disease. Polyunsaturated fatty acids (PUFAs) such as eicosapentanoic acid (EPA) improves resistance to high salinity. Salmon increase the levels of essential fatty acids in the cell membranes of the gill after transfer to higher salinity.
