Krill harvesting vessel Saga Sea ISO certified

Aker BioMarine’s krill harvesting vessel Saga Sea is now ISO 9001:2008 certified. The ice-rated trawler, which fishes for krill in the frigid conditions of Antarctic seas, can now produce QRILL™ meal that has been harvested and processed in an on-board plant that meets international customer and regulatory requirements.

Research confirms the nutritional benefits

Research teams in several countries have tested the nutritional value of QRILL™ meal and compared it with conventional feed ingredients. The results consistently demonstrate that QRILL™ meal brings added value, whether it is with salmonids or marine species such as shrimp and sea bream. Growth rates are improved, reducing time to market; production volumes are higher and more stable; biological risks are reduced while the attractive, tasty aquaculture products it provides find increased value in the marketplace.

Bigger fish

Salmon fed on Aker BioMarine’s QRILL™ meal weigh between 18 to 23 percent more than salmon fed on conventional feed, according to research performed by Nofima Marine, a leading Norwegian aquaculture research center. This means fish can be harvested bigger or sooner.

Healthier shrimp

Research results have proven that shrimp are healthier, have improved growth performance and are even better tasting when fed on a diet containing Aker BioMarine’s QRILL™ products. QRILL™ fed shrimp also have a higher economic margin compared with regular feed.

Unique harvest technology

Krill is caught and processed using our Eco-Harvesting™ system. This assures maximum freshness, while the process minimizes physical damage to the krill, and minimizes by-catch. Rapid onboard processing preserves all the key nutrients in both krill meal and krill oil.

The fishing equipment remains underwater while a continuous stream of water flows through the net and directly into the hose, bringing the krill live and fresh directly into the factory vessel. This advanced fishing process allows for continuous processing of fresh raw material with superior product quality.
